La découverte de l'Amérique par Christophe Colomb, 1958-1959, 410x284 cm , St.Petersburg(Fl.)

Discovery of America by Columbus

Painted by:

Salvador Dalí

In the late fifties Dali was under the influence of historic nineteenth century painters.
Dali had left behind the new art directions (think of almost any kind of modern "ism" at that time)
which led to criticism of his comtemporary fellow painters.
Nevertheless Dali made his his own plans and in this painting showed here he combined catholic themes with history pieces.
Dali uses a fotomechanical process to unite an earlier painting of him "The Christ of Saint John of the Cross"
with the halberdiers in the painting of Velazquez "The surrender of Breda" which is present in the museum Prado in Madrid.
